In letters to Bernard Barton FitzGerald writes about his travels in England and Ireland; his family; art collecting, especially his interest in John Constable; and his friends, particularly Alfred Tennyson and Thomas Carlyle. He also mentions Edward Moxon, Leigh Hunt, William Wordsworth, John Henry Newman, Maria Edgeworth, George Peacock, Samuel Laurence, George Crabble, Thomas de Quincey, Charles Dickens, and William Makepeace Thackery. With the letters are Fitzgerald's copies of and commentaries on the Biblical stories of Joseph, David, Saul, and Jonathan, copies of two poems by Tennyson, a registered letter receipt, and five letters from John Gibson Lockhart and Charlotte Sophia (Scott) Lockhart to Barton.
